Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health problem, and antibiotic-resistant organisms (AROs) are considered as “nightmare bacteria”. The influence of AMR is far more serious in Vietnam due to unregulated antibiotic use. Over 60% of ICU patients were colonized with AROs, and the same proportion of patients acquired AROs during their ICU stay. Colonized patients then become infected with their previously colonizing AROs. These infections are associated with prolonged hospital stay and high mortality rate because they are resistant to most currently used antibiotics.
