Oligomeric amyloid β (Aβ) is suspected of being the most toxic species in Aβ aggregation and of being responsible for development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Development of compounds that are able to eliminate already formed, toxic Aβ oligomers is very desirable. In the recent years, we have developed all-D-enantiomeric peptides that are able to directly and specifically eliminate toxic Aβ oligomers in vitro. The in vivo proof of concept for “D3”, the lead compound of this development, was accomplished in several treatment studies.

This talk will present how using multi-band excitation pulses to excite multiple slices at the same time and then acquire the slices simultaneously can speed up scanning like fMRI and DWI/DTI. For unfolding the acquired data into images of the two separate slices, the signal from multiple coil elements is processed using a SENSE algorithm

Dr Adam Walker, Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, will discuss bidirectional communication between peripheral (non-CNS) tumours, such as breast cancer, and the brain using syngenic, orthotpic mouse models of breast cancer metastasis. Adam will outline novel mechanisms through which cancer, surgery and chemotherapy hijack the brain to induce chronic impairment. These mechanisms include neuroinflammation, the IDO-kynurenine pathway and blood-to-brain transport mechanisms.
